Police Or Bodyguards??

Image result for images on nigerian police

The Nigeria police force is the principal law enforcement agency in Nigeria with a staff strength of about 371,800 men and women with exclusive jurisdiction throughout the country to serve and protect Nigerians.

According to the constitution their main objective is to safeguard life and properties but lately they've been deviating from that and resorting to escort/bodyguard of politicians, celebrities that want to show off, even acting as bouncers at events.

Constitutionally the executive and the other arms are allowed to be guarded by policemen attached to their portfolio but when rich people now hire the policemen like private security guards then we have a problem. What could be the problem?? Is it idleness? OF COURSE NOT! in respect to police to  citizens ratio,  Nigeria has one of the undermanned police in the world not enough men to go round not to talk of sparing some. If using the United nation Policing standard of 1 policeman to 400 civilians we are lagging behind as we would be having 1 policeman to about 484 civilians and if using one of the busiest police department in America "Los Angeles police department statistics shows they have 348.5 policeman per every 100,000 civilians we would still be lagging behind as we would b having 206.6 policemen to protect 100,000 civilians so what could really be the reason??

In a survey by Ahmadu Bello University, the Nigeria police force is the most corrupt institution in Nigeria. Well we don't need a survey to tell an Average Nigerian that, its what we see and experience daily and its gradually turning traditional. Well this seems to be the reason: the policemen searching for other source of income and they resort to this, the "Ogas at the top" that allocates this men 'illegally' to serve under politicians for favors or as a sign of loyalty and also renting them out to celebrities.

"THIS HAS TO STOP" We'll be outlining some possible solutions to solve this:

Firstly the police wholistically, needs restructuring, this is a long process and requires a lot to go through We'll skip this for now. Secondly we think the PSC needs to Up their game, the PSC (police service commission) is the civilian arm of the police force responsible for appointment, promotion and discipline of police officers, the PSC keeping tracks of the police officers would make them sit up a bit.

Thirdly the police needs to maintain cordial relationship with the arms of government that is, no pledging of allegiance to a party and its cohorts but since we are in a society where rules are broken by the powerful and affluent, we see the Nigeria police deviating from their constitutional duties and lastly the police needs proper reorientation and lectures on what their duties are, the standard should be set high for them to stop dancing to the tune of every man with potbelly. This should start from recruitment.  The recruiting exercise should be strict, on merit, fair and to ensure getting the right man for the job. Police should recruit people willing to serve the force and this great nation not people who see the police as a way out of unemployment and when given the opportunity they tarnish the image of the institution and the country.

With this few points we are on our way to getting positive result...
